Transforming teaching through the use of interactive whiteboards

Interactive white board (IWB) technology has become quite popular within our schools. In Alberta, a concerted effort has been made to provide these tools in every classroom. Although these tools are quite useful for teaching and learning, some estimate that at least 50% of all IWB's worldwide are used as glorified projection screens. Knowing this, it is very important that these tools are not just purchased, installed, and left for teachers to figure out on their own. I offered to facilitate a learning team (action research) for a group of seven K-5 teachers who received several IWB's for the classrooms. This session will lead you through their journey, share their research questions and some of their project work, some of their raw honest thinking about this journey, and their conclusions of how the IWB's supported and to what degree, their teaching practice and their students learning. I will also share a few tools that we used to collaborate through-out the process. One key success factor is the collaborative action research learning team approach in supporting teachers in fearlessly learning new ways of supporting their classrooms.
