Podcasting to Improve Reading and Speaking Skills

This session will demonstrate how podcasting with intermediate LD/ ELL students and reluctant primary readers helps to develop reading fluency and oral language. Struggling learners and English Language Learners need many purposeful opportunities for oral reading and speaking. New English speakers are often reluctant to speak in class and struggling readers avoid reading out loud. The process of podcasting allows for integration of subjects, critical thinking, problem solving, reading, writing and speaking while collaborating with their peers. LD and ELL students in grades 4-6 created their own podcasts of the stories they wrote following the format of "The Three Bears" set in their native countries. You will follow the students from, webbing, drafting, writing and the final stage of podcasting. This project affirmed the child's native language, cultural heritage, provided an authentic audience and created an engaging activity to practice speaking and reading.
