Innovative Research in Educational Technology @ UVic: Video conferencing, laptop carts, and smart boards, oh my!!

In this presentation, Dr. Valerie Irvine profiles the new $750,000 Technology Integration and Evaluation (TIE) Research Lab at the University of Victoria (Canada), which has been funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation, British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund, Dell, Telus, Knowledge North, the University of Victoria, and SMART Technologies. Valerie will showcase the cutting-edge current directions for research, including multi-access learning (Irvine, 2009), K-12 video conferencing, school-university partnerships in technology integration, and pre-service field experiences. Conversations surrounding opportunities for collaboration in research and participation in graduate programs will be welcome.

Dr. Valerie Irvine is an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria (UVic). She has a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology (Instructional Technology) from the University of Alberta, where she held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) doctoral fellowship. She also holds two bachelor degrees from the University of British Columbia in Education and English. Valerie has been involved in the field of educational applications of information and communication technologies for over a decade. She is the co-founder and co-director of the new $750,000 Technology Integration and Evaluation (TIE) Research Lab, which includes high definition codecs, mobile laptop carts, recording and streaming solutions, graduate student research space, an experimental classroom, and advanced video, statistical, qualitative, and log data analysis software The lab was also funded by multiple sources at the University of Victoria and Knowledge North (CANARIE). Her research interests involve integrating and evaluating educational technologies into various learning environments (distributed or face-to-face) and with various populations (health, higher ed, K-12).
